Food Insecurity Surges Beyond Pandemic Levels
Food insecurity in the U.S. has reached alarming levels, surpassing even the height of the pandemic. Discover the shocking statistics and the growing divide in our economy.
Alarming Trends in Food Insecurity
Recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals that food insecurity is now more prevalent than during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey conducted in February found that 10% of families reported missing meals due to lack of food, with nearly 16% relying on food donations. This marks a significant increase from just 4% in 2020.
The situation is particularly dire for families earning less than $50,000 a year, where rates of food insecurity are nearly double. Many families are forced to wait in long lines for food distributions, highlighting the growing need for assistance. As Amy Breitmann from the Golden Harvest Food Bank notes, some individuals are even sleeping in their cars to secure food.
