Major Changes to F1 Hybrid Regulations
Formula 1 is gearing up for a significant shift in its hybrid energy rules, set to take effect at the Miami Grand Prix from May 1-3. The new regulations aim to address the challenges posed by the current hybrid powertrains, which have been criticized for creating dangerous speed differentials among cars due to limited battery power.
Starting in Miami, the maximum energy drivers can recharge per lap will decrease from 8 MJ to 7 MJ during qualifying. This change is designed to encourage drivers to race at full throttle more often, enhancing the overall excitement of the event. Additionally, the energy harvesting capability during super clipping will increase from 250 kW to 350 kW, allowing for better performance in key acceleration zones.
- •Key updates include:
- •Reduced energy recharge limit from 8 MJ to 7 MJ per lap.
- •Increased super clipping power from 250 kW to 350 kW.
- •Enhanced MGU-K power deployment in acceleration zones.
These adjustments are expected to minimize energy management concerns for drivers, leading to a more thrilling racing experience while still maintaining the unpredictability of hybrid powertrains.
