IBM's latest chip architecture integrates nearly 100 billion transistors on a chip the size of a human fingernail, nearly doubling the transistor density of its previous generation. This advancement, termed the “world’s first sub-1 nanometer chip technology,” is set to significantly boost compute performance and energy efficiency, according to IBM Research director Jay Gambetta.

The new technology, referred to as the 7 angstrom node, utilizes a unique “nanostack” architecture that vertically stacks transistors in a staggered layout. This innovative design allows for:
