In a significant move, staff at Google DeepMind have voted overwhelmingly to unionize, driven by ethical concerns regarding the use of their AI technology in military applications. With 98% of Communication Workers Union (CWU) members supporting the initiative, employees are demanding recognition to ensure their work does not contribute to military actions that violate international law.
An anonymous employee expressed the urgency of the situation, stating, "We don’t want our AI models complicit in violations of international law, but they already are aiding Israel’s genocide of Palestinians." The union's demands include:
