General Motors (GM) is stepping into the energy storage arena with a groundbreaking partnership with Peak Energy. This collaboration aims to develop a new sodium-ion battery chemistry specifically designed for grid-scale applications, marking a significant shift in the automotive industry's approach to energy solutions.

Sodium-ion batteries offer several advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries, including:

• Cost-Effectiveness: They are cheaper to produce, making them an attractive option for large-scale energy storage.

While GM's sodium-ion cells are still years away from commercial production, the company is already selling lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells to LG Energy Solution for immediate use in energy storage systems.
