Shell Acquires ARC Resources for $16.4 Billion
Shell's acquisition of ARC Resources for $16.4 billion is set to significantly boost its production growth. Discover how this strategic move reshapes Shell's future in North America's energy landscape.

Major Acquisition in the Energy Sector
Shell has announced its agreement to acquire Canadian shale producer ARC Resources for a staggering $16.4 billion. This deal, which includes $13.6 billion in cash and shares along with assuming ARC's $2.8 billion debt, marks Shell's largest acquisition in a decade. With this purchase, Shell aims to enhance its production growth from a modest 1% to an impressive 4% annually, adding approximately 2 billion barrels to its proven and probable reserves.
The acquisition is particularly strategic as it re-establishes Shell's presence in North America after selling its U.S. shale business in 2021. Wael Sawan, Shell's CEO, emphasized that this move will transform Canada into a “heartland” for the company, strengthening its resource base for decades to come. Key highlights of the acquisition include:
- •Addition of 370,000 barrels per day of oil and gas production
- •Focus on the Montney shale basin in British Columbia and Alberta
- •Enhanced position in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market
This acquisition not only bolsters Shell's operational capabilities but also positions it as a major player in the global LNG sector, where it already holds a significant market share.
