Greggs Tackles Shoplifting by Removing Self-Service Counters
Greggs is rolling back self-service counters in high shoplifting areas to combat theft. Discover how this move aims to protect staff and customers alike.

Greggs' New Strategy Against Shoplifting
In a bold move to combat rising theft, Greggs has decided to eliminate self-service display cabinets in its stores most affected by shoplifting. This decision comes in response to alarming statistics showing that shoplifting offences in England and Wales have surpassed half a million for the first time. The bakery chain is now opting for a theft-proof counter system where staff will hand over products directly to customers.
The trial is currently being implemented in select locations, including:
- •Croydon and Peckham, south London
- •Whitechapel and Upton Park, east London
- •Birmingham and Wilford, Nottinghamshire
In addition to this, Greggs is introducing software that will provide real-time information to local police stations, enhancing security measures. This initiative follows a trend where other retailers, like Pret a Manger and Costa, have resorted to hiring bouncers to protect their merchandise. The British Retail Consortium has reported that the retail sector is facing significant losses, with an estimated £400 million attributed to shoplifting last year.
Greggs aims to create a safer shopping environment while addressing the growing concerns of violence against shop workers, which has become increasingly prevalent in recent years.
